In the spotlight: Contrast Recruitment

Kate Pexton, Managing Director
Contrast Recruitment

I spent almost 20 years recruiting recruiters globally before Contrast was launched in January 2015. I am one of the few people in recruitment who made  a concerted effort to enter the industry; many fall into it when they apply to an agency to secure them a new role… I have a degree in Languages and have always had a deep interest communication. This, coupled with the love of a busy, demanding role means recruitment is perfect for me!

Tell us a bit about your business?

Contrast are a provider of Office based staff for a variety of sectors across the Cheshire and South Manchester Region. We recruit for a multitude of Companies, from local Start Ups to Global organisations with a presence in the North West. We are a team of seven, with each of us having a specific area of expertise, and recruit across Office Support, HR, Finance, IT, Marketing, Events, Property and Construction. We operate a flexible approach according to our Clients’ needs, and provide an array of services from Retained Search for more niche, senior roles, to the provision of Temporary Workers at a moments’ notice.

Tell us about your role within the business?

I am responsible for the strategy of the Company and for driving New Business. We recently hired Tom, a Business Manager with 18 years’ recruitment experience, to manage our growing Team, and to look after Operations. I am blessed with an amazing Team who manage and service our ever growing Customer base, which gives me huge confidence in our growth plans for 2020 and beyond.

In your opinion, what is the most interesting/high profile/exciting project you or your business has worked on?

Every project that we work on is interesting; recruitment plays such a vital part in business, it is extremely important for us to make sure we make the correct match on both sides of the relationship. As work is often a large part of a Candidates world, it is so rewarding to make a difference to peoples' lives when we find them the perfect role. As for the most high profile project, I could not possibly name names, however we have placed Director level candidates into organisations who have  gone on to transform businesses and therefore the local business landscape.

How long has the business been operating and how long have you been based in Macclesfield?

Contrast was incorporated in November 2014 and the doors opened in January 2015, and we have grown organically since then. I am a proud Yorkshire lass, and have lived in Rainow since 2005. The Southern contingent of the Team is growing at pace, with 2 of the team being from Surrey, and the remaining 4 members of the Team all hail from Macclesfield / Congleton.

What made you choose Macclesfield as a place to base your business?

Macclesfield has so much to offer, I can see the rolling hills of the Peak District from our Office (and am 7 minutes’ drive away when I want to take a bracing walk at the end of a busy day) and I can be in Manchester in 26 minutes, London in 90. There are great Transport links with the M6 being close to hand and I can be in Staffordshire in less than 20 minutes. There is huge choice for people from an Employment / recruitment point of view, and so much creativity in the area, there is a palpable energy. Plus, it is a really friendly and there is lots to do.

What’s the best thing about working in Macclesfield?

I love the people here, there is a real sense of community and this is always present, particularly during the Treacle Market and the Barnaby Fayre. MaccFest has attracted some really great acts and The Grosvenor Centre and Picture Drome, alongside other investments and improvements have brought additional benefits.

Do you have and specific future goals for the business that you would like to share?

We have a clear business plan for the next two years, which we have all bought into and are committed to delivering. The fiscal target is only one of the areas in which we are striving to achieve growth; it is equally important for us to invest in ongoing staff training and development, in Local Charities and philanthropic pursuits, and of course, expansion of the team.
